A rubber drain plug is a sealing plug made of oil-resistant rubber (such as nitrile rubber (NBR) or fluorocarbon rubber). It is typically used in drain holes or service ports on equipment such as engines, transmissions, and fuel tanks to provide a seal and prevent leaks during temporary or routine oil draining. It is commonly found in automotive and machinery maintenance applications.
They are typically shaped as cones, cylinders, or threaded plugs. The material offers oil resistance, temperature resistance, and elasticity, allowing them to fit tightly against metal threaded holes to prevent leakage.
Unlike “metal drain plugs,” rubber drain plugs are typically unthreaded and rely on interference fits or press-fit installation. They are primarily used for non-high-pressure, low-stress drain ports or process plugs (such as inspection ports on some transmissions or chassis drain holes);
They are commonly used to temporarily seal drain bolt holes during maintenance (in conjunction with metal bolts) or as dust-proof and drain plugs (such as rubber plugs on automotive chassis, though they do not serve as primary pressure-bearing seals);
